Fresh flowers brighten a breakfast nook.

A breakfast nook can take on a prominent place in one’s home as a special gathering place for the most important meal of the day.  Usually designated in a small, recessed area near the kitchen, the nook should be as warm and inviting as the food that’s served on the table.

Breakfast nooks are ideal settings for sitting down to a more intimate meal, or having a quiet moment with a fresh cup of coffee while reading the paper or a book.  However you decide to use this space, there’s an undeniable appeal in that it is more casual than a dining table setting, and yet retains an endearing allure as a snug area to share your most heartwarming meals with family and friends.

The following are a few breakfast nook ideas on how to best utilize your space when designing the perfect retreat from the busier kitchen area.

The right table setting.  Searching for the perfect breakfast nook table entails knowing how many people you wish to seat.  Having a bench-style seating area can be a beautiful and efficient way to incorporate extra seating space.  You may also choose to include a few additional side chairs as needed on the opposite side.  You’ll also want to consider how much space you’ll need, and if you’d like a casual setting or a luxury table.

Keep the clutter away.  One way to start the day off stress-free is to keep any unnecessary items off the breakfast table and surrounding area.  Leaving bills, junk mail, and keys out can be an eyesore and create unwanted mind-clutter in the morning.  With such a small area to begin with, you’ll want to create a serene and clean table setting to maximize your space and enjoyment.

Ensure that you have plenty of light.  Natural light is preferable, and most built-in alcoves are already situated near windows, which creates an impression of more space.  Also, taking in the sun’s rays while having breakfast every morning can make the difference between starting off the day on a good note or a bad one.  Never underestimate the benefits of natural sunshine!

Breakfast Nook Setting

Display only the things you love.  Keep things simple.  As breakfast nook spaces are usually smaller than an average dining room, you’ll want to choose your decorative items with extra care.  A simple color palette and minimalist patterns will create an ambiance that is light and casual.  Fresh flowers in your favorite vase can serve as the perfect accent that appeals to the senses and yet adds a breath of calm to the setting.

Bring a layer of depth with key accent furnishings.   An area rug within the breakfast nook lends the space a sense of warmth and cozy charm.  If space allows, a small accent table can be implemented to display decor items so as keep the breakfast table as clutter-free as possible.

Add a touch of dramatic flair to inspire your mornings.  Dress your breakfast nook with airy, flowing curtains or make a statement with lighting using vintage or modern chandeliers.  Whatever your preference, your special nook should inspire and create a comfortably inviting atmosphere.
