With summertime looming around the corner, we can already taste the fun-in-the-sun activities that will inevitably follow.  Swim parties and backyard barbeques are in order, and perhaps you’ve family members returning from college for their break, or maybe your mother-in-law is dropping by for her “surprise” annual visit.  Regardless of who you’ll have visiting, you’ll want to prepare a cozy space for them that is both comfortable and inviting.  By making your guests feel welcome, they’ll immediately feel the time spent with you is special.

Don’t know where to begin?  We’ve got a few ideas.

A Cozy Bed

Ideally, a double bed with 3-4 supportive sleeping pillows should suffice.  Use cotton linens to maximize sleep comfort, already ironed and pressed for a welcoming arrival.  You also might provide them with extra light and/or heavy blankets as needed.  A luxury canopy bed provides an elegant setting that will impress your guests and make them feel like they are staying at a luxurious 5-star hotel.

Minimal Decor

There’s nothing more stress-inducing in a room than seeing clutter.  Keep decor simple with just a few decorative items such as a small floral arrangement on a nightstand.  You may also choose to leave a few books or magazines, as well as a notepad, stationary and pens handy.  Provide a reading lamp near the bed for convenience.  An alarm clock with a radio as well as a telephone within the room are nice touches, although not necessary.

Storage Space

Clean out the closet or provide a storage area such as an elegant armoire to ensure enough space for your guests’ clothes and belongings. Prepare several hangers, especially for hanging jackets and sweaters.

Bathroom Basics

Whether your guests will have their own bathroom or will share one, it’s important to leave space for their toiletries and personal items.  You may wish to provide a supply of soap, shampoo, and several washcloths and clean face and bath towels for your guests.  Don’t forget a clothes hamper, especially if they will be staying for an extended period of time.

Make Them Feel at Home

Summer means warmer climes for most areas, so providing a pitcher of cool water and drinking glasses daily will be an appreciated gesture.  Depending upon who your guests are, think ahead about things they may need while staying with you – perhaps bed slippers, a bath robe, a vanity mirror or a cozy luxury chair will make them feel right at home.  Your guests will love staying with you, and thank you for your thoughtfulness.
